Beyond having to squeeze more of the scene into the frame than possible, there are certain times when portrait orientation will help improve the composition.

We have used portrait orientation when there is considerable foreground interest. Vertical formats allow our photographs to include more information in foreground, giving images much more depth. These foreground elements help build a much stronger composition because there is interest in the middle ground and background of the image as well.
