A prime example of this is when there is an unbroken horizon present, like the images featured. Shorelines where the water meets sky or hills runs continuously from the left edge of the frame to the right edge of the frame.
By composing this image in a horizontal manner, we emphasise horizons and the image can give the viewer the illusion that it extends well beyond the edges of the frame. Because of this the image feels much larger than it is.
